Why we hired a Social Media Intern to accelerate our timeline

bliss.teablends

Recently I decided that I wanted to focus more on my website and more specifically build the tea inventory and grow online sales. When I made this decision, I knew there was a possibility that I would need some assistance. Adding a social media intern to my team could potentially accelerate the timeline to get the infrastructure in place to better market the tea products.

The first thing we agreed on was to create a new Facebook and Instagram to focus on Bliss Teas Blends. We named the Facebook page Bliss Tea Blends, curated by Bliss Tea & Treats. These pages would focus specifically on the teas that we blend. We will tell stories and share more about the ingredients and how they work together to create wellness in our bodies.

We also figured that if we use new properties then the link will take customers directly to shopify as opposed to the reservation site on our Bliss Tea & Treats experience site.

When guests go to Bliss.TeaBlends on Instagram and Bliss Tea Blends curated by Bliss Tea & Treats on Facebook we will be very intentional about education around tea preparation, how to serve a proper cup of tea. Tea etiquette and more importantly what goes into our teas.

We will use static images of the teas but will complement them with videos that tell the story. For example, when we created our love potion tea four years ago it was inspired by our Beauty and the Beast theme. We had to have a tea that reflected the theme of love and we did a tea blend that truly tells a story to your pallet. Since creating that blend we have taught hundreds of guests how to blend that tea.

Creating new social media is not enough to create a better experience for our guests. We also must make some modifications to our shopify site. We will organize the products so they are easier to find. We will also include multimedia as part of each product page. This video content we can also share on youtube, facebook and Instagram. Guests need to have an easy way to experience the teas virtually and be a part of the creative process. We want our guests to request special blends based on their wellness needs. We believe that as healthcare becomes more challenging for everyone, more people will look to teas and will look to us to explore natural ingredients. We would like to help them discover alternative wellness options.

Over the last two weeks I have been creating wellness teas that we can categorize into specific verticals like: (Gordon, 2024)

Herbal Teas, Green Teas, Black Teas, Specialty and Seasonal, Women’s Wellness

Implementation Tips (ChatGpt, 2024):

• Filters: Add filters for caffeine level, flavor profiles (e.g., fruity, floral, spicy), and dietary preferences like organic or vegan.

• Cross-Promotion: Include suggestions like “Pairs well with” for accessories or gift sets when viewing individual teas.

• Visual Cues: Use distinct imagery or color-coded labels for categories to make them visually engaging and intuitive.

The Little Tea House That Could

Title: Bliss Tea and Treats: A Story of Perseverance

Once upon a time, there was a mom and her daughter who had a special tradition: every night before bed, they would share a cup of warm tea together.

One cozy evening, the little girl sipped her tea and looked up at her mom. “Mom,” she asked, “does everyone have tea before bed like us?”

Her mom thought for a moment and said, “I’m not sure, but maybe we could share good tea with our community. We could open our very own tea house!”

Her daughter’s eyes lit up. “Can we name it Bliss after our dog? And we have to have treats!”

The mom laughed. “Bliss Tea and Treats it is!”

So they set to work. The mom had to build, paint, and prepare the tea house, all while balancing her dreams with patience and love.

But just when everything was ready, the unexpected happened: the COVID pandemic began. The tea house had to open with “tea to-go,” and though it wasn’t what they had imagined, they were determined to share tea and treats with others.

During this time, something else hard happened—Bliss, their beloved dog, passed away. The little girl and her mom felt a deep sadness. It was hard to even say the name “Bliss” without tears.

But the tea house continued. They opened on Mother’s Day, sharing tea, kindness, and the spirit of Bliss with the world.

Then, not long after, an important movement began—Black Lives Matter. To show their pride and support, the mom placed a sign in their window that read Black Owned. But one morning, they found that their window had been broken because someone didn’t believe a Black person could own a tea house like theirs.

The mom felt the weight of the moment, but she took a deep breath and said, “We will open today. And we will keep sharing tea and love with everyone.” When they opened their doors that day, they saw something amazing: the entire community came out to support them. It turned out to be the busiest day they’d ever had!

Years passed, and the tea house became a beloved part of the community. But then, their landlord decided not to renew their lease. They had to find a new home for Bliss Tea and Treats.

The mom looked around and found inspiration to build a beautiful tea garden space in their backyard which was perfect for a tea house. They planted their garden with love, right near the place where their dog Bliss was laid to rest under a guava tree.

Today, the garden is filled with the scent of fresh tea leaves, herbs, and blossoms. Everything in the garden grows plentifully, as if to say, “You are exactly where you are meant to be.”

Through it all—the challenges, the losses, and the joys—Bliss Tea and Treats had taught them both something very important. Perseverance means continuing on, even when things are hard, because the journey itself is filled with love, strength, and memories.

And every evening, as the mom and her daughter shared their tea, they smiled, remembering Bliss and all they had built together. They had created a place of warmth, kindness, and happiness for everyone in the community to enjoy.

The End.

Stop drinking coffee on an empty stomach. Drink tea!

Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can have several potential effects on the body:

1. Increased Acidity: Coffee stimulates the production of stomach acid. Consuming it on an empty stomach can lead to increased acidity. This may cause discomfort, heartburn, or indigestion in some people. Over time, it might even irritate the stomach lining, increasing the risk of gastritis.

2. Cortisol Levels: Coffee can elevate cortisol, a stress hormone, especially when consumed in the morning. Drinking coffee without food may cause cortisol levels to spike further. This can lead to jitteriness and anxiety. It may even increase stress over time.

3. Blood Sugar Fluctuations: Coffee can sometimes cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate, particularly in sensitive individuals. Without food, this effect might be more pronounced, leading to energy crashes later in the day.

4. Impact on Digestion: Some studies suggest that coffee can speed up digestion, leading to bowel movements. On an empty stomach, this can happen more quickly, sometimes causing digestive discomfort or urgency.

5. Jitters and Anxiety: Without food to buffer its effects, caffeine can hit harder. It can lead to symptoms like shakiness, jitters, or increased heart rate. These effects occur especially in those sensitive to caffeine.

These effects may vary by individual. It’s often recommended to have a light meal or snack before drinking coffee. This can help reduce potential negative effects on the digestive system and overall well-being.

Whether it’s better to drink tea or coffee in the morning largely depends on individual preferences and health considerations, as both beverages offer unique benefits:

Benefits of Coffee:

1. Higher Caffeine Content: Coffee typically contains more caffeine than tea, which can lead to increased alertness and improved focus. This can be beneficial for those needing a more substantial energy boost in the morning .

2. Antioxidants: Coffee is rich in antioxidants, which may help protect cells from damage and reduce inflammation .

3. Metabolism Boost: Some studies suggest that coffee can enhance metabolic rate, potentially aiding in weight management .

Benefits of Tea:

1. Lower Caffeine Levels: Tea generally has less caffeine. This can be easier on the stomach. It may lead to fewer jitters for those sensitive to caffeine.

2. Calming Effects: L-theanine in tea promotes relaxation. It enhances mental clarity, making it a good option for a more balanced energy boost without the crash.

3. Hydration: Tea, especially herbal varieties, can be more hydrating than coffee, which is beneficial for overall hydration .

Considerations:

Individual Tolerance: People respond differently to caffeine; those who are sensitive may prefer tea to avoid jitters.

Health Conditions: Individuals with certain health conditions might prefer tea for its gentler impact on the stomach. This is particularly true for those with acid reflux compared to coffee.

Personal Preferences: Taste, ritual, and social aspects can also influence the choice between tea and coffee.

Ultimately, both beverages can fit into a healthy diet. You might find it helpful to experiment with each one. See which beverage better aligns with your morning routine and personal health goals. For more detailed insights, you can explore the following sources: Healthline, Verywell Fit.

The Benefits of Growing Cucumbers: A Nutrient Powerhouse for Health

Growing cucumbers

This summer we planted a new garden and two cucumber varieties were included, one from a starter plant and the other from seeds. This blog will take you on a journey of how I fell in love with cucumbers and how they are healing my body as I experience menopause.

Cucumbers are one of the most versatile and refreshing vegetables you can grow in your garden. Not only do they thrive in warm climates and are easy to cultivate, but they also offer a host of health benefits, making them a fantastic addition to any diet. In this blog post, we’ll dive into the many benefits of growing cucumbers, focusing on how they can support your magnesium intake and overall well-being. This is imperative because muscle spasm is one of the symptoms of menopause. I did not know that I had such a good source of magnesium growing in my garden.

Why You Should Grow Cucumbers

Cucumbers are incredibly resilient and fast-growing, making them a great option for both beginner and experienced gardeners. Whether you have a large garden or just a small space for pots, cucumbers adapt well, offering a generous yield when properly cared for. Here’s why you should consider adding them to your garden:

Low Maintenance: Cucumbers require minimal effort once established. As long as they have sunlight, water, and good soil, they’ll thrive.

High Yield: With regular care, a single plant can produce numerous cucumbers throughout the growing season.

Versatility: Cucumbers can be eaten raw, added to smoothies, infused in water, or pickled for later use. They’re a fantastic all-around vegetable.

But beyond these practical benefits, cucumbers are a nutritional powerhouse, especially when it comes to magnesium.

Cucumbers and Magnesium: A Vital Nutrient

Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a key role in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body, including muscle function, blood pressure regulation, and energy production. Unfortunately, many people don’t get enough magnesium in their diet, leading to issues like fatigue, muscle cramps, and even hypertension. Here’s where cucumbers come in.

Magnesium Content in Cucumbers

Cucumbers are a natural source of magnesium, particularly in the skin. By consuming cucumbers regularly—especially if grown organically in your own garden—you can help boost your magnesium intake. While cucumbers may not contain large amounts of magnesium compared to foods like nuts or leafy greens, they’re an easy and hydrating way to add more of this vital mineral to your diet.

Magnesium for Heart Health: Magnesium helps relax blood vessels and improves circulation, which can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease. Adding cucumber to your meals can be part of a heart-healthy diet.

Magnesium for Muscle Function: Magnesium plays a critical role in muscle relaxation and contraction. If you experience muscle cramps, incorporating more magnesium-rich foods like cucumber can provide relief.

Hydration and Magnesium: Cucumbers are 95% water, making them an excellent source of hydration. Proper hydration supports better magnesium absorption in the body, which is vital for energy levels and preventing cramps.

How to Use Cucumbers for Maximum Nutrient Benefit

If you’re looking to boost your magnesium intake with cucumbers, it’s important to know how to prepare them to retain the most nutrients. I recently made a smoothie with juiced cucumber, apples, basil leaves and oranges. Add cucumber to your next smoothie blend.

1. Blend Cucumbers with the Skin

Cucumber skin contains a significant amount of magnesium, so to get the most out of your cucumbers, blend them with the skin intact. This can be in the form of a green smoothie or as a base for soups and sauces. Blending keeps the fiber and nutrients, including magnesium, intact.

2. Eat Raw in Salads

For a fresh, crunchy way to enjoy cucumbers, slice them raw into salads. Pairing cucumbers with magnesium-rich leafy greens like spinach can further enhance your intake of this essential mineral.

3. Infused Water

Cucumber-infused water is not only refreshing but also helps you stay hydrated while adding a subtle amount of magnesium to your diet. You can combine cucumber slices with herbs like basil or mint to create a cooling, nutrient-packed drink.

4. Cucumber Snacks

Enjoy cucumber sticks as a healthy snack with hummus or guacamole. This not only provides hydration and magnesium but also offers fiber and other nutrients to support digestion.

Additional Health Benefits of Cucumbers

In addition to their magnesium content, cucumbers offer a variety of other health benefits:

Rich in Antioxidants: Cucumbers contain flavonoids and tannins, which help fight free radicals in the body, reducing inflammation and the risk of chronic diseases.

Supports Weight Loss: Cucumbers are low in calories and high in water content, making them an ideal food for those looking to maintain or lose weight. They keep you feeling full and hydrated without adding excess calories.

Skin Health: Cucumbers have been used for centuries to soothe skin irritation and reduce swelling. Their high water content, combined with vitamin C and silica, supports skin elasticity and can help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

How to Grow Cucumbers in Your Garden

Growing cucumbers is relatively simple, and they do well in various conditions as long as they have enough sunlight and water. Here are a few tips for success:

1. Choose the Right Variety: There are different types of cucumbers, including slicing cucumbers and pickling cucumbers. Choose a variety that suits your needs.

2. Plant in Full Sun: Cucumbers thrive in warm temperatures and need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

3. Water Consistently: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Cucumbers need regular watering, especially during hot, dry periods.

4. Provide Support: Cucumbers are vines that grow quickly, so consider using a trellis to support their growth and make harvesting easier.

5. Harvest Regularly: Pick cucumbers when they are firm and green, before they over-ripen. Frequent harvesting encourages more growth.

Final Thoughts

Growing cucumbers in your garden is a rewarding experience that can provide you with a steady supply of fresh, nutrient-dense vegetables. By incorporating cucumbers into your diet, you not only benefit from their hydrating properties but also from their magnesium content, which supports various essential bodily functions.

Whether you’re looking to improve your heart health, support muscle function, or simply enjoy a delicious and refreshing snack, cucumbers are a versatile and valuable addition to your home garden and diet.

Three mistakes to avoid when caring for a parent who had surgery

Last week my mom had knee replacement surgery. This was the first time she had any major surgery. It was a learning process for all of us. First you must have a clear understanding of the medication that is required pre and post-surgery. It is important to review the medication list from the doctor. Make sure that all prescriptions are filled in advance. One mistake I made while caring for my mom was I did not review the medication in advance. Her surgery was approaching and she did a good job of organizing her medication in a basket. The surgery was successful. But when we got home we thought she would had everything filled and ready to use. As I was leaving to go home on the first night I sat in the car for a moment. My intuition kicked me in the butt and told me to go back in the house to review the medication. I don’t know about you, but I am not familiar with all the medications and their technical names. But we discussed Oxy with the doctor prior to surgery and it was not included. When I called the doctor and pharmacy I discovered that they were out of stock and that’s why it was not filled in advance. Fortunate for us we discovered this mistake 30 minutes before the pharmacy was closed. My dad rushed to the pharmacy and managed to get a replacement pain medicine. Can you imagine getting through the first night of knee replacement surgery without the necessary pain medication.

The second mistake I made was assuming food options were considered in advance of the surgery. I assumed that my parents went shopping and had ample food in the house that was easy to prepare. Quickly, I discovered that I had to get to Costco and stock up on some healthy food options. In our family we cook. But when surgery is involved and everyone is sleep deprived, it’s important to make things easy as possible.

Processed foods are not recommended when you have surgery because the body really needs good nutrition to heal. Therefore, I purchased a few prepared family meals that were easy to heat and serve. The patient has to eat, but my dad should also be eating healthy meals.

I made a third mistake. I did not consider the nausea tea that I blended for a friend a few months ago. I made a custom blend for nausea with ginger, peppermint, chamomile, fennel, lemon balm, cloves and basil. After administering the medication for a few days, it dawned on me. She was taking pills for nausea. However, they were no longer effective. Quite frankly I was so focused on a digestive solution I did not think about replacing the nausea pills. First, we solved the constipation problem that happens to everyone who takes a large amount of medication. Then, I was able to focus on the nausea. In the future I will have both tea blends prepared in advance. It’s unfortunate that all problems are solved with pills. The goal should be to also incorporate natural herbal options along with the medication.

If you find yourself in a similar situation, remember one thing, you are doing your best. If you are not aware of something just listen to your gut and ask questions. We attended all doctor appointments with mom. However, we still encountered a few post-surgery hurdles along the way. Hopefully this will help you to consider a few things to do in advance, during and after surgery. This preparation can guarantee that your journey with your loved ones is a little bit easier. #surgerystratgies #kneereplacementsurgery

Discover the wellness benefits of Loose Leaf Tea

When I started my journey with the World Tea Academy, I had no idea that there was so much to learn about the tea industry. So much of my time over the year and a half taking classes was spent tasting teas and reading about the history. My goal in this post is to summarize the information that I learned so you can have a better understanding of what tea is and why it is so good for you.

Bliss Tea Blends bliss-tea-treats.myshopify.com

Tea is made from the camellia sinensis plant that originally was grown in China. This plant was discovered by an emperor who sat under a tree one day and the leaves landed in his bowl of water. From the heat of the sun the leaves brewed nicely into a bowl of tea. He went on to share the lovely flavor with others and this is how we now use this plant for tea varieties.

The camellia sinensis plant is used to create several kinds of teas. There are 6 varieties of teas: they are white, yellow, green, oolong black, puerh. The white and yellow tea are fairly expensive. They experience the least amount of processing and are the purest to their natural source.

Green Tea

The green tea is one of the most common teas globally, it keeps its green color because it’s steamed during the processing stage. The flavor of green is commonly recognized across most cultures for its wellness benefits. Green tea is known to support brain function, boost metabolism and fat burning, heart health and lower the risk of cancer. Green tea has catechins, a type of antioxidant that can reduce inflammation.

In comparison green tea has higher levels of catechins, while black and oolong teas have more theaflavins due to oxidation. As mentioned catechins are linked to cancer prevention while theaflavins are more associated with heart health.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is a cross between black and green. It’s one of my favorite flavors because its distinctly different than the green and black because it’s oxidation is unique and can deliver vary flavors from floral, roasted toasty notes. One of the many benefits of oolong is bone mineral density, making it beneficial for long term bone health. I enjoy the alertness and relaxation that oolong delivers. Somedays I drink oolong because it calms but it also has keeps me alert. It’s a nice feel good tea with a pleasant flavor.

Black Tea

Black tea is popular for its traditional flavor. We were all raised on Lipton tea which is a Ceylon tea out of Sri Lanka. Now that I am a tea expert, I rarely drink Ceylon because there are so many other options in the black tea variety. We can benefit from the heart and gut health, antioxidants of black tea. Most know that black tea is known to be the most caffeinated of all varieties. What many may not know is that black tea can also help to manage blood sugar levels.

Puerh Tea

The final tea is as we discuss the teas derived from the camellia sinensis plant, is puerh. This is a fermented black tea. The flavor is distinctly different than any other tea because of the fermentation process. It is rolled into a cake like pancake and aged for years. This tea is a sign of wealth in Chinese culture. When special guests visit, the family will serve their finest puerh. I distinctly remember falling in love with puerh the first time I had a cup. It’s the true black tea. Meaning it brews up black where a black tea will brew up with auburn or reddish tones. When preparing puerh it’s ceremonial in that you chip away at the cake to extract what will be brewed.

I hope you learned a bit about the camellia sinensis and how it has blessed us with some many beautiful teas.

Sips of Wisdom Podcast

In this episode of Sips of Wisdom we discuss our tea journey and how it brought us together. One of the key takeaways is the grading of tea and how important it is to make tea with quality loose leaf tea and avoid tea bags. But don’t take our word for it. Go ahead and get a tea bag out the pantry and cut one open. Take a moment to consider if it looks like a leaf or dust. Are the ingredients recognizable? For example if it’s a herbal blend with hibiscus and roses do you see whole pieces of those flowers? If it’s one of the teas mentioned above, can you recognize the tea leaves or does it look like dust? We encourage using loose leaf tea because it is a higher grade and simply taste better than tea bags.

You may argue that the tea bags are significantly cheaper than the loose leaf tea. You are absolutely correct. If you don’t care about taste and benefit then it’s perfectly fine to consume tea using tea bags. But once you have a premium loose leaf tea, it’s virtually impossible to use traditional tea bags.

Shelf Life of Tea

Shelf life of tea is important, especially for green tea. The efficacy of green tea is best when consumed the year it’s harvested. But since most consumers don’t know the year it’s harvested, I recommend that you pay attention to how long it’s in your pantry. To avoid having tea sit for too long, I recommend that you buy it in smaller quantities. When I purchase tea for the tea room, I never keep more than a pound or two on hand. This forces me to buy fresh tea and ingredients often and ensuring that we are using fresh ingredients. Give yourself the gift of high quality tea and enjoy the benefits by drinking tea daily.
